July 29, 2017 Newsletter

Our July meeting was held at Sauers Veneer in Lexington, NC with 26 members and guests present.  Special guests were Claudia Carter and Ellen Drechsler, daughters of Claude Edwards, one of our founding members.  It was a wonderful treat to see the pictures of Claude’s which they brought with them.

The National Show was held in August in Colorado, and we look forward to a report of this show.

Entries in competition at the NC State Fair were discussed.  Unfortunately, the entry deadline is prior to the meeting, so individuals will need to go ahead and enter via either paper entry form or online.  To reach the information, go to the NC State Fair 2017 website.  Click on:  Enter a Competition, then General Competitions, then Handicrafts and Hobbies, then Competition Rules.  Our class is under Miscellaney:  Marquetry……  We are divided into two categories, Experienced and Novice.  If anyone has a problem filling out the entry form, please do not hesitate to contact me either by e-mail (ejwoody@centurylink.net) or phone (919-245-1109).  I’ll be glad to help.  There is a box on the Handicrafts and Hobbies page for printing a paper entry form or entering online.  Please, let’s have lots of entries to show our work to the public.  If you will bring your entry to the meeting at Al’s, Beth will be glad to take them to the Fairgrounds for entry and will pick them up after the Fair, returning them you either at the Extravaganza or the November meeting.

Of course, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the shopping spree in Larry’s warehouse.  And I believe everyone got lots and lots of goodies to play with!  Thanks, Larry!

Demonstration

Bob Moffett of the Chapel Hill Woodturners Club demonstrated the Lichtenberg process, which is burning a pattern on wood using an electrical charge.  The burnings resemble a lightning bolt.  It was fascinating to watch this process, as it is totally unpredictable.  Several of our members had the opportunity to try this process.  A very BIG thank you to Bob for such an interesting demonstration.

Since I’ve not learned to import pictures into this newsletter yet, I’ve attached a couple pictures of Bob’s demonstration to the e-mail itself…….

Next Meeting

As shown in the box above, our next meeting will be at Al Spicer’s Shop.  Al will provide a demonstration of marquetry pattern designs using a computer.

May 6, 2017 Newsletter

Our May meeting was held at Herzog Veneer in High Point.

We were brought up-to-date on the new brochure, which has now been printed.  Please notify Jim Davis if you would like a copy or know of a shop/gallery/woodworking store in your area that would be a good place to display them.  Charlie Brown will bring some copies to our July meeting.

The Klingspor Woodworking show will be held this year on October 27 and 28 in Hickory.  We will continue discussion about our participation.

Also, it is time to begin thinking about entering a picture in competition at the NC State Fair in October.  More discussion on this at a later meeting also.

Demonstration

Charlie Brown presented a very informative demonstration of doing the compass rose pattern.

OF NOTE:  Al Spicer’s table of many, many pieces was featured in the March-April issue of Fine Woodworking.

As shown in the box above, our next meeting will be at Sauers Veneer in Lexington on July 29.  As always, the meeting will get underway with refreshments at 10:00 am and a short business meeting.  After the business, Bob Moffett of the Chapel Hill Woodturners will give a demonstration of the Lictenburg Process.  Although primarily for wood turning projects, we hope to be able to adapt it to marquetry.  We will have lunch at one of the nearby barbecue places and upon our return,  we all get to enter the “candy store” and shop for veneer!  Larry always has lots of interesting items for us to choose from.  He has told me he has lots of new items, so be prepared!   If you want a particular veneer, please let me know by July 15 and I’ll pass that along.  If it is available, he will pull some out for us.

March 18, 2017 Newsletter

Our March meeting was held at the Folk Art Center in Asheville with 21 members and guests present.  There was lots of new business with the primary item being the printing of a brochure for our club.  As you know, we are well along the way to completion of this brochure, as a rough draft has been sent to our members for comments.  Please be sure to get your comments to Jim Davis (james.davis@main.nc.us) by April 25.  Eleven people submitted photos of their work for possible use to illustrate our brochure.  Dave Peck, Ellen Kisker, and Ken Horner are acting as the judges to pick the photos for use in the brochure.  Those chosen are asked to bring the original item to our meeting May6 so that Al Spicer can do a professional photo for use in the brochure.  The ones chosen will be notified around April 25.  The finished brochure should be available around the end of May.  If you want copies of this brochure on hand, please notify Jim Davis (e-mail above) as soon as possible so we can be sure to get enough printed.
