February 2016 Newsletter

February 25, 2016

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

The Marquetarians of the Carolinas November 7 meeting was held at Klingspoor in Hickory NC.  We had 23 members and guests present.

The Group participated in the Klingspoor Woodworking Show in Hickory in October and were very well received with a number of people expressing interest in marquetry.  Our members took their saws and knives and demonstrated various cutting methods throughout the Show.  They answered many questions about marquetry and the different ways of cutting and kept a crowd around them.

We held a silent auction of items brought by our members.  These included veneer, tools, books – all of which would be of use to someone just starting out or looking to augment their collection.

We discussed possible programs/demos for our meetings, and want to vary these topics from the simple ones for beginners on up to advanced ones for experienced marquetarians. We request that any requests for specific topics be sent to Bonnie Richardson at urabus2000@aol.com.  Also, if anyone is willing to demonstrate or lead a discussion on a particular topic, please let Bonnie know that as well.

Our Show and Tell included many items, from the State Fair entries to a project that demonstrated how to repair a hole in veneer, a student’s first (excellent!) efforts working on their own, and bookmarks to be donated to a fund raiser.

Our demonstration topic for this meeting was on wood burning  given by Michelle Parsons.  She gave an excellent demo, showing a variety of burning tips and burners, explaining the uses of each.  She also talked about how wood burning can be applied to marquetry, particularly in accenting some of our pieces.  She gave us a lot of ideas and I believe we will see the results of our experimentation with this technique in future show and tell items.

Our next meeting will be held in March 19 at the Folk Art Canter in Asheville.  As usual, we will get underway at 10 am with refreshments, and anyone interested in marquetry is welcome.  Our program will be a discussion of what we want to accomplish with the Club this year and also further discussion of programs and demonstrations for our meetings, as well as the May meeting.  Your opinions and ideas are important and needed – this is YOUR club!  Let’s have a great turn-out for this meeting.

We have several meeting dates set, but no programs.  These dates are:  July 30 at Herzog Veneer in High Point; September 10 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington; and November 5 at Klingspoor in Hickory.  The May date is open.  As you know, the meetings at Herzog and Sauers will include the opportunity for a veneer shopping spree.

Our dues for 2016 are now due and payable.  Please send a check for $15.00 made payable to me (Beth Woody) at 109 Elmer Road, Hillsborough, NC.  Some of you paid at the November meeting.  If you can’t remember whether or not you have paid, please drop me an e-mail and I’ll let you know.

Some of you are receiving this newsletter because you have taken a marquetry class or have expressed interest in our club.  We welcome your joining the group; however, if you choose not to do so at this time but want to continue receiving e-mail information about the Marquetarians of the Carolinas, please let me know.  If you do not wish to continue to receive information about the group, please let me know that and I will remove you from our list.

Until March 19, Happy Cutting!

Beth
