After our September meeting, we will have one more meeting in 2014, which will be at Klingspoor in Hickory on November 1.  It has been suggested that we have a sale/auction of items at this meeting because of the available space.  We will discuss this at our September meeting to see how much interest there is in this.

Our next meeting will be September 13 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington.  As usual, the meeting will get underway at 10 with refreshments.  For a program, we will have a round-table discussion of problems we have encountered, helpful hints we have discovered, and any other information anyone would like to share with the group.  Please be sure to bring any example you would like to share.  Also, please bring something for show and tell.  After lunch, of course, the main event will be a trip to the famous back room “candy store” and a shop til you drop session!  Larry tells me he has some new and exciting veneers, but if anyone has any special requests, please let me know so I can pass them along.

The schedule of meetings for the rest of the year is:  July 19 at Herzog Veneer; September 13 at Sauers Veneer; November 1 at Klingspoor  in Hickory.  All meetings will get underway at 10 am with refreshments and directions will be sent prior to each meeting.  At present, no program has been set up for our meeting at Herzog, but Bonnie will let us know in a later e-mail if one will be presented, as we want to allow plenty of time for shopping!  Speaking of that, if anyone has any special requests or needs for specific veneer, please let me know ASAP so I can let Sam and Sabrina know we are looking for that and if they have it, they will definitely put it out for us.

May 10, 2014 Meeting at Al Spicer’s Shop

Our next meeting will be at Al Spicer’s shop on May 10, 2014, starting at 10 a.m..  He will be demonstrating the Marquetry Donkey, a.k.a. Chevalet, French Horse, chevalet de marquetrie.  Al says that there will be an opportunity for anyone who wants to try it to do so.  Al will also be demonstrating inlaying oval stringers.  Since he does not live near any restaurants that can handle our group, we ask that everyone bring their own picnic lunch.  The club will provide drinks and ice for the lunch as well as the morning refreshments.  If you have a folding chair, you might put it in, just in case we have a large number of members present.

Also at this meeting, we will have several items for sale.  Danny Wylie, the son of Bob Wylie, who died several years ago has some of his father’s marquetry supplies that he wants to sell.  John Robinson has them and will bring them to the meeting.  I will try to send out a list of what will be available a little closer to meeting time, so that everyone who may be interested can be prepared with some cash money.  If anyone else has an item or two that they would like to sell or give away, please feel free to bring it to the meeting as well.

Directions to Al’s:  The address for the shop is 4110 Puett’s Chapel Rd. Dallas NC, 28034.  Al’s phone number is 336-855-1325.

From I-40, head south on US321 and take the Hardin Rd exit (first exit after you cross the Gaston County line). At the top of the ramp turn right onto Hardin Rd. Go to the blinking red light, continue straight. The shop is 1 and 1 tenth mile from the red light. (NOTE: the road changes names after the light) It becomes Ike Lynch Rd. In one mile the road makes a sharp turn to the left and becomes Puett’s Chapel Rd. Ike Lynch Rd. goes off to the right. April 2014 Newsletter

April 20, 2014

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our March meeting was held March 15 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  We had 20 members and guests present – what a great turnout!

John Robinson was elected Vice President of our group and he was also elected to serve as the chapter representative for the American Marquetry Society.

For our club project of using water in a picture, we had many examples, and all showed something different and interesting.  A few commented that they had not yet finished their picture, so they  were encouraged to continue working and bring it to another meeting.  Some of the ways of representing water in pictures were using the grain of the wood, fragmentation, and a stylized representation of water.   Along with showing water in a picture, there was a discussion on how to make harewood, which is good to use for water.   The old standby for making harewood is to soak veneer in a solution of ferrous sulfate and water.  The name brand product Ironite which can be found in garden centers can also be used in a solution of water.  However, dissolving more Ironite or ferrous sulfate in the water does not make the veneer darker.  If you want black veneer, soak walnut veneer in the solution.  Another method of making harewood is to dissolve a steel wool pad in vinegar.  This usually takes a couple weeks for the vinegar to dissolve the steel wool.  Be sure that the steel wool you are using does not have oil in it.  This can be either wiped on the veneer or the veneer can be soaked in the solution.

Our demonstration was creating a radial book matching (sunburst) by Jim Davis.  He showed us how he does this for making lazy susans.  He brought tools he designed to help him in these projects.  There was a hinged mirror that he uses to help determine what part of the veneer he wants to use for the sunburst.  The mirror helps show what the match will look like.  He has also designed a jig which he uses with his band saw and belt sander in cutting the pieces so that the edges are very straight and will fit together well.  Jim brought several projects in various stages of completion to show us.  This was one fantastic demo.

Most of you have paid your dues; however, there are a few who have not.  Please make the check for $12 payable to me and send them to me at 109 Elmer Road, Hillsborough, NC  27278.  If you can’t remember whether you’ve paid or not, please let me know and I’ll be happy to check the record.

Feb 2014 News Letter

February 18, 2014

  Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our November meeting was held at Woodcraft in Greensboro.  It was sparsely attended with only 6 members present, but we had a great meeting and those who were not there certainly missed out!  For the program, we had a round-table discussion of all sorts of topics, including type of glue used, and methods of gluing, pattern making, pattern transfer, framing, to name just a few.  We also discussed using a mix of veneer shavings and glue to texture pictures, using casting epoxy in fragmentation, and that ammonia turns oak grey.

We had an excellent turn-out at the Hickory Show with 24 requests for information.  Each of those individuals is getting this newsletter by e-mail and we certainly hope that you can attend our meeting.

We discussed our 2014 meetings.  The first of these will be March 15 at the Folk Art Center in Asheville.  We will get underway at 10 am with refreshments.  Jim Davis will do the program on radial matches.  This is one that I think we all would be interested in seeing!  Also, our club show and tell project of a picture using water in some way is due.  It is your choice how much or how little water you use in the picture, but it should be central to the theme.  Let’s have lots of pictures and see how many different ways water can be portrayed.  Don’t be shy — if you’ve done more than one, bring more than one!  For those who are just beginning and may not have attempted doing water yet, please bring whatever you are working on.  We would love to see it.

A possible schedule for other meetings in 2014 is:  May 10 at Al Spicer’s shop in Bessemer City; Herzog Veneer in High Point in July (date to be determined); Sauers Veneer in September, either the 13th or 20th (to be determined at the March meeting).  That leaves November to be planned, so be thinking about where we would like to have it and discuss it in March.

In addition to setting dates and places for meeting at the March meeting, as you may know, Julie Russell is having some health problems that have necessitated her resignation as the National Chairman of the Board, Carolinas Chapter Board Member, and Vice President of the Carolinas Chapter.   John Robinson has agreed to perform any duties in the interim until a permanent replacement can be found.  Please be thinking about this and be prepared to discuss it at the March meeting.

Along the same lines, Julie is looking to sell her Rockwell saw.  She said it has a 23+” throat, it is an industrial cast iron head on a stand.  It originally belonged to Pete Rose (one of our old time members), he converted it for marquetry.  I would like to sell it for $175.00.  If anyone is interested email me at:  russellja@hotmail.com or call me at: 704-474-4398.  I can bring it to the Asheville meeting in March.

If anyone else has any small items that they wish to sell or give away, please let Bonnie Richardson (urabus2000@aol.com) know so she can be prepared for this.

It is time for dues to be paid, and several members have already paid.  The dues are still $12 per year and may be sent to Beth Woody at 109 Elmer Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278 or paid at the March 15 meeting.  If you are mailing and paying by check, please make the check payable to Beth Woody, and she will send you an e-mail upon receipt of the check.

Directions to the Folk Art Center:  From all directions:  Take I-40 to Exit 55.  Follow the signs to the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 382.

Until then, Happy Cutting!
