August 2014 Newsletter

20 August 2014

Dear Fellow Marquetarians,

Our July meeting was held July 19, 2014 at Herzog Veneer in High Point.  We had 11 members and guests present.  The highlight of this meeting was our shopping spree in their back room.  As usual, they had a fantastic array of items for us to choose from, and I think everyone found lots to their liking.

We were updated on the Hickory Woodworking Show which will be held on October 17 and 18.  People are needed to man our booth and talk with visitors.  If you can give any time to this, please contact Bonnie Richardson at urabus2000@aol.com.

John Robinson was confirmed as our new Vice President and chapter representative for the American Marquetry Society.

We had 11 items for show and tell.

August Ron Ainaire gave an excellent presentation on bleaching and dying veneer.  He had a prepared chart showing the results of different methods, such as using chorine tablets dissolved in water, but this should be done only in an exceptionally well-ventilated area.  He also described using foaming bathroom cleaner to darken veneers.  Another method for darkening veneers was to use 12 brewed tea bags and soak ash, lacewood, karelian birch burl, and sycamore.

After our September meeting, we will have one more meeting in 2014, which will be at Klingspoor in Hickory on November 1.  It has been suggested that we have a sale/auction of items at this meeting because of the available space.  We will discuss this at our September meeting to see how much interest there is in this.

Our next meeting will be September 13 at Sauers Veneer in Lexington.  As usual, the meeting will get underway at 10 with refreshments.  For a program, we will have a round-table discussion of problems we have encountered, helpful hints we have discovered, and any other information anyone would like to share with the group.  Please be sure to bring any example you would like to share.  Also, please bring something for show and tell.  After lunch, of course, the main event will be a trip to the famous back room “candy store” and a shop til you drop session!  Larry tells me he has some new and exciting veneers, but if anyone has any special requests, please let me know so I can pass them along.
